Ellen Vlaeyen holds a Master of Science in Nursing and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Leuven (Belgium) on the implementation of effective fall prevention strategies in nursing homes.
Ellen is the vice-president of the Flemish Center of Expertise for Falls and Fracture Prevention at the Academic Center for Nursing and Midwifery, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Leuven where she also co-teaches courses on leadership development and management skills. Since September 2021, she is appointed as assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, Healthcare and Ethics at the UHasselt (Belgium). In addition, she is a visiting professor at the University Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, UGent (Belgium) and the University of Witten/Herdecke (Germany), where she teaches courses on nurse led care and knowledge transfer.
Her primary research interests are fall prevention, geriatric care, integrating effective evidence-based interventions into routine practice (implementation science) and leadership. With the mission to improve leadership in care, Ellen co-leads the Network Leadership Development in Care and supports with leadership development courses and seminars for leaders in healthcare. In addition, Ellen is part of TRANS-SENIOR (Transitional Care Innovation in Senior Citizens); an EU funded project designed to train healthcare innovators with 13 subprojects in 6 countries who will shape future care for senior citizens. Ellen is co-chair of the EU Falls Festival 2022; a conference that brings together leading academics, researchers, health care practitioners, clinicians, industry representatives and key stakeholders from across the globe to celebrate best practice research and innovation in the multidisciplinary study and implementation of falls prevention in older people.
